Women, ADHD, and the value of women's attention.

Something that has been on my radar in the past few months is how many posts and memes I see about women and ADHD. What strikes me is that these posts are often assumptive, as if women and ADHD now go unquestionably hand in hand.

I didn’t look at data before writing this. I am not judging anyone. I want everyone to feel as good as they possibly can. I have a Master’s in Special Education and understand that brains do in fact work differently and a diagnosis can be empowering. This post is not intended to be medical advice in any way.

All that said, take or leave anything I ever say. I’m just sharing this today because the observations have now elevated me to the level where I want to write about it.

I feel bothered that culture wants to lump women and ADHD together. I feel concerned that the collective consciousness is now flooded with this affiliation. And I wonder how this is impacting women.

Is this another cultural brainwash to ultimately undermine women? To convince women that something is wrong with them?

Do you feel frazzled? Do you have trouble focusing? Do you wish you could finish more in a day without distraction?

Yeah, me too sometimes. It does seem to be more in the last few years as I navigate perimenopause. In fact, I took a little online quiz the other day and scored pretty high for ADHD symptoms. But I also imagine that there are very few modern day women among us who wouldn’t qualify for an ADHD diagnosis if we sought one, honestly.

The last time I was at my hormone doctor, she threw it out there. It felt faddish when she said it. Like a catch all. I thought, “Do you even know enough about me to know that that applies to me?” I left it alone.

Do you know that chronic stress also can bring on symptoms that look like attention deficit?

Do you know that chronic over-demand and running on fumes will hurt the brain?

That unhealed trauma can mirror ADHD?

That in perimenopause, as our hormones change, so too can our thinking, but that this isn’t necessarily a bad thing?

So many symptoms that women struggle with are made worse by the cultural conditions within women are forced to exist. Maybe your “symptoms” are symptoms of a broken world, and maybe your own feminine system’s inability to deal with that is a signal to align more to the feminine system and the natural world.

I know women who have found great comfort in receiving an ADHD diagnosis and subsequent treatment. Ironically, come to think of it, those women in my life are also blended with political stress and fury, taking on the stress of world events, not happy in their jobs, tolerating shit in their relationships, not listening to their souls, and leaning toward prescriptive and medical interventions more than their own soul work.

Here’s what I want to say, before I get myself in a hot heap of trouble talking about something that may be sensitive and that I’m not medically qualified to talk about -

Your attention is in high demand. Your life force, as a woman, is in very high demand.

Every time you readily hand over your attention and life force energy to political commentary, social media scrolling, and every single injustice of the world before you tend to the voice of your own soul, your own Source Connection, and your own reasons for being - guess what - that’s going to make you feel scattered.

The attention of WOMAN, used well, is incredibly powerful.

What “they” have known forever is that if they can co-opt the attention, focus and life force of women, they can do whatever they want. Read that again.

Our responsibility at this time is to hear ourselves clearly, hear the voice of our soul, honor whatever our bodies are showing us, attune to the Earth, and hear Source via our direct line. Then, listen to those messages. Act accordingly. That is the wisdom of Woman. If you are plugging into social media or a news cycle before doing this - forget it. There goes your greatest resources, handed over to a regime that is actually seeking to control you. What you give your attention to grows.

That is crazy-making. Yes. It will feel crazy.

So I don’t trust the flood of memes affirming that women are so ballistic as a whole that we need medication for the symptoms out of our control. (Some will need or want medication. No shade. Do not attack me.)

But sometimes we don’t need a diagnosis, we need affirmation that things are crazy.

We don’t need to try to manage more, we need to admit overwhelm and that we need help.

We don’t need a pill, we need healing.

We don’t need another cultural affirmation that women are losing it, we need to harness the spacious, vast inner wisdom that is ours.

It may feel scattered or overwhelming on earth right now. It likely does. We are in the midst of spiritual warfare and potential planetary evolution. It requires our skill, focus, and grit.

We, women, are being called to become stronger in our own self-concept, in how we manage our God-given resources - including our attention.

We are being called to listen to the answers coming forth from within us, answers only heard when we’re still and quiet enough to hear them. We can cultivate this stillness. We are not at the whim and mercy of the powers that be.

I hope that this is motivating in some way.

Questions to ask yourself and journal about:

  • Where are my resources going?

  • Where am I inadvertently allowing my precious inner resources to leak through distractions?

  • Where am I intentionally placing my focus and attention, knowing that what I focus on grows?

  • How am I prioritizing my Self, my evolution, and my purpose before giving my attention over to what is happening outside of me?
